I am a graduating Master's in Computer Science student who is passionate about learning machines, including but not limited to computers, humans, and my dog Bob. I have a diverse technical background, having worked as a software engineering intern, a bioinformatics researcher, and a graduate research student studying natural language programming.

I am a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington. Before joining University of Washington, I worked in industry as a researcher. I lead the UW-BioNLP group. My group's research is on natural language processing and its application to clinical domain to enable meaningful secondary use applications that have direct impact on improving quality of patient care and advancing clinical research. My research has been funded by National Institutes of Health (NIBIB and NCI), Microsoft, and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. I serve as an associate editor for Journal of Biomedical Informatics.

Extensive industry research experience, with expertise in natural language processing (NLP), text mining, information extraction, information retrieval, knowledge graphs and semantics. Strong experience in leading research and development projects and prototypes for various domains including biomedical and clinical informatics. Contributed to efforts in developing analytics for next-generation GE Healthcare products, including Smart Reading Protocol for Centricity Universal Viewer. Received PhD in Computer Science from Arizona State University. His dissertation is in the area of information extraction, natural language processing and bioinformatics.
